Another Round Of Snow, Ice This Week For Millions


As the eastern two-thirds of the United States struggle with the coldest air of the season, a disruptive winter storm is set to soon cover the South with snow, ice, and rain.


The storm will be able to spread a few inches of snow and hazardous ice across a nearly 1,400-mile stretch of the South from North Texas to the coast of North Carolina due to unusually cold temperatures that have dipped deep into the region. This could have serious and severe effects on a region that is not as accustomed to winter weather.

The Winter Storm Severity Index predicts that the storm will have at least moderate effects in portions of Texas and Oklahoma due to the possibility of snow and ice. Significant disruptions to daily life and hazardous travel conditions are likely in a few areas where this storm may have major or even extreme effects.


According to a weather watch issued Sunday by ERCOT, the operator in charge of the state's electrical grid, cold temperatures will raise power demands in Texas but normal grid conditions are anticipated. More than 200 people were killed when the state's grid failed during the devastating winter storm and protracted deep freeze in 2021.


Central and southern Texas, including Austin and Houston, will be soaked by rain and possibly a few embedded thunderstorms.
